Sweet vol. 1

My main contribution to this first volume of the SUGAR NINJAS is a black and white version of my children’s picture book story, THE KITTEN DETECTIVES (developed from a very rough plot suggestion by Bob Pendarvis). A full color version should be available soon. I specifically wanted the animals to have a realistic yet friendly look, which is what I would have enjoyed in my own childhood years.

My work is not always geared for children, but usually maintains a sincere quality that is suitable for all ages. I think the best stories are the ones that anyone can appreciate and return to at an older age to discover deeper layers. Segregation of subject matter and complexity according to age can sometimes be an unfortunate loss to readers.

As the daughter of an Air Force parent (hi, papa!), I had the wonderful opportunity of living in so many different places: England, Germany, Texas, North Dakota, Nevada, and Georgia. While in England, I attended British school, resulting in my education starting a year earlier than my American counterparts and, more amusingly, a British accent. Though the accent soon dissipated, I have come to realize that the subject matter I encountered there has stayed with me forever. The charming depiction of animals seen there, especially mice, really played a part in my interest for nature.

I would like to thank my former professor, Bob Pendarvis, for giving me the opportunity to contribute to this anthology. I would also like to thank my parents for never hesitating to support my education, and my sister for keeping me together for the four years I was in school.
